Backing grows for Cromarty Firth Freeport as PSG Marine & Logistics throws its support behind the initiative

PSG Marine & Logistics has joined the bid to create a freeport in the Cromarty Firth.

The leading provider of logistical and marine support solutions joins the dynamic partnership of private, public and academic sector organisations including the Port of Cromarty Firth, Global Energy Group, Port of Inverness, The University of the Highlands and Islands, and The Highland Council on the Opportunity Cromarty Firth steering group.

Their ambition is to establish the Cromarty Firth as one of the up to ten freeports planned by the UK Government, following the Scottish Government’s backing of the freeport initiative and providing Scottish ports the opportunity to achieve ‘green port’ status, focusing on fair work, sustainable and net zero priorities.

If successful it is anticipated that a Cromarty Firth freeport would attract considerable inward investment into the Highlands, providing high quality, skilled jobs and business opportunities for the next 50 years.

PSG Marine & Logistics, based at the deep water facilities of the Port of Cromarty Firth, are key providers of logistical and marine support solutions in the offshore energy sector and for projects being undertaken in the Cromarty Firth. Boasting extensive experience and expertise, PSG Marine & Logistics has been heavily involved in a number of recent high-profile contracts, having delivered major port marshalling scopes for the Moray East Offshore Windfarm, as well as project support to Kincardine Floating Offshore Windfarm.

Steve Clark, Managing Director at PSG Marine & Logistics said: “The Cromarty Firth is uniquely positioned to offer the perfect location as a freeport, bringing with it the opportunity to maximise job creation and levels of economic growth across the Highlands and Scotland that has not been seen since oil boom in the 70’s.

“Opportunity Cromarty Firth already has the support of the area’s leading organisations, and PSG Marine & Logistics are delighted to join the steering group as we bid to make this dream a reality.”

Bob Buskie, Chief Executive of Port of Cromarty Firth – speaking on behalf of Opportunity Cromarty Firth – said: “We are delighted that PSG Marine & Logistics has chosen to join the Opportunity Cromarty Firth steering group and we welcome them onboard as we continue to push for the Cromarty Firth’s freeport bid.

“Their arrival is welcome, as we continue to work alongside our partners from industry, academia and the public sector to ensure our prosperous ambitions for the region and Scotland are realised with the formation of a freeport.

“The Cromarty Firth has an incredible opportunity on its doorstep, with the proposed acceleration in offshore wind deployment. Our ambitions include an advanced manufacturing plant, a serial production facility for floating offshore wind structures and the creation of a hydrogen hub in the area. These opportunities combined would be transformational for the whole of Scotland and would create sustainable jobs and business opportunities. Through our collective assets and resources, we will work to ensure the benefits of implementing a freeport in our region are realised.”

PSG Marine & Logistics, a leading marine and logistical support services provider based in Invergordon, has recently secured an offshore windfarm staging contract from Dutch dredging and offshore contractor company Boskalis.

Work has begun on the Port of Cromarty Firth, where PSG is undertaking the onshore handling and loadout of mooring equipment destined for the Kincardine Offshore Floating Wind Farm project off the coast of Aberdeen.

PSG Marine & Logistics are experienced in the supply of logistical support services, port agency and marine logistics solutions to vessels engaged in a wide variety of oil & gas, renewable and decommissioning activities. The project’s scope includes the heavy lift and transport of over 2000 Te of anchor chain, 180 clump weights and 15 drag anchors. As with all technically demanding projects of this nature, PSG’s engineering team are working to deliver all heavy lift and transport services with the utmost adherence to client specification and safety procedures.

Steve Clark, MD of PSG Marine & Logistics stated:

“We are delighted to secure this offshore wind port marshalling contract. PSG is a well-established logistical servicing company and a key member of the supply chain supporting the offshore energy markets in the Cromarty Firth. We have successfully executed a number of major port marshalling scopes, including fixed foundation offshore wind contracts staged at the Port of Cromarty Firth. Most recent of these was the Moray East OWF project.

This award is to be our first floating wind contract, and we are keen to use this opportunity to showcase PSG’s capabilities within this developing sector.”

PSG has invested heavily in technologically advanced solutions, personnel and facilities, ensuring that all heavy lift and transport services provided remain scaleable and compliant with the increasing demands of the offshore and renewables sectors.

A full range of state-of-the-art quayside support, heavy lift and transportation equipment are being utilised as part of the offshore wind port marshalling project, including heavy lift cranes with up to 500Te capacity. A skilled team of support personnel specialising in heavy transport, lifting and engineering will facilitate the project.

Multi-purpose offshore construction vessel “Boka Falcon” will then transport the loaded equipment to the site of the Kincardine Wind Farm Project.

The Kincardine Offshore Wind Farm project is being developed approximately 15km from the coastline of Aberdeen, and will be comprised of one 2MW MHI Vestas turbine as well as five 9.5 MW MHI Vestas turbines, each installed on triangular semi-submersible foundations. Once completed, Kincardine Offshore Wind Farm will be the world’s largest floating wind farm project with a nominal capacity of 50MW. This project will be the first in the world to use floating wind turbines of over 9MW capacity.

The project is currently on track to be completed and fully operational by the end of 2020, at which point it will generate up to 218GWh of green energy per year, enough to supply power to around 55,000 households.

Boskalis, which conducts major marine projects in over 90 countries, is supporting the installation of the first semi-submersible floating turbines in the North Sea.

Previously the Dutch firm has supported turbine installation at the Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm, where major innovations in suction bucket foundation installation technology were implemented for the first time.

The floating wind farm market is set to continue to grow for many years, aided in part by the versatility of the technology and the ability to deploy installations at shallower water depths.
